Regulus is 79 light years away from earth. All A, B, and C stars in the system. https://www.google.com/search?q=star+regulus also search for the standard deviation and it can give an idea of Regulus A being 0.7+/- light years. 3 months off is not too bad if the technology the aliens were using caused time dilation of approximately 90 days between Regulus and Earth. Keep in mind that 3 months in the universe is de minimis AND current Earth technology to measure star distance is still nascent and not that accurate compared to what other civilizations may have. Was the last 79 some years....pre planned? If so, by whom?
