Imagine waking up in the morning and deciding to take a job. It would require specs of a being that is not you, but your behavior/resume is what is needed.
You are hired to go back in time to another planet...earth 1999. Mission spec is to get an item, or mate for genetic material and manipulating the timeline for a wealthy trader, etc...
The problem of time travel is that only inorganic materials only. Information and building materials can be transferred. Localism is used for cheaper processes. Information can be transferred in quantum computing basis. (Transfer bandwidth is wide enough for some communication plus a new body you can "pilot" using a "sleeping" pod in your own home.
You get the mission spec and the supply depot in Earth's 1999 boots up a body for you to transfer your consciousness to.
The ship is a flying saucer like ship (on the moon or not on earth.) Get in and go. Real time used is maybe an earth day or two...etc...
The body looks like in a mirror, very basic stripped down version of a gray alien or some kind of archetype, etc....
This is possibly going on but not just with items. It might be going on with genetic recovery programs. Maybe the future is not as varied genetically. Maybe the future has more scarcity in resources and opportunities, etc... So, we must assume that we are wealthy in a different way.
What is cool now might not be cool tomorrow. What if tomorrow the cool factor is to have a synthetic body? Then too many people have the technology and we loose a great chunk of genetic diversity? (Old human bodies discarded while the souls play in other (synthetic) bodies.)
Is that why they are coming back to 20th-21st century earth; to harvest our genetics? To harvest DNA is the prime way to get further family or to have a family linage?
We must understand that it might not be extraterrestrials, but just as fantastic of a story.
This does not deny extraterrestrials, it only enhances the diversity of what is in our solar system, galaxy, and universe.
