Why the mirroring? It has been observed in trees and plants that a fractal pattern is better for photosynthesis than light just shining on the leaves. Maybe same purpose for the symmetry? Secondly, why have more asymmetry when it is genetically cheaper to have a mirror of your self: less DNA required for twice the surface area for food?
